Dramatic footage of the blaze and thick plumes of black smoke have been shared online, with images and videos showing flames behind a retail premises.

Emergency services were called to the site of the blaze at the Assheton Arms Hotel in Middleton at around 12.15am.

People living in the area were told to keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke
