The US president confirmed the killing of the al-Qaeda leader in a televised address. Ayman al-Zawahiri had plotted the 9/11 attack, along with Osama bin Laden.

Stephen McGown, who was held for six years by radical Islamists in Mali, thought his captors were kidding when they said he was free.
