Teenager named among victims of Croydon tram crash

Family and friends of the seven victims of the Croydon tram crash have visited the scene to lay flowers, as work continued to remove the wreckage.

Some want to know why the names of those who died still haven't been confirmed, but Croydon MP Gavin Barwell said the authorities are still working on formally identifying some of the victims.

Police investigating the incident have said they are also looking into reports that another tram nearly derailed at the same spot last week and appealed for witnesses.

Croydon Council has created an online fundraising page to help people affected by the derailment.

It states: "Many of those involved will require long-term emotional and financial support in the difficult months ahead.

"This is the official fund to raise money to enable those directly affected by this tragedy, their families, and where appropriate, the wider community, to have access to ongoing care and support. "

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has appealed for witnesses who may have any information related to the Croydon tram crash which killed seven people on Wednesday.

RAIB inspector, Ian Capewell, added that an interim report on the possible reasons for the crash would be published next week.

He said the agency would like to talk to people who were on the derailed tram or from anyone who regularly travels on the tram route, works on the tram or people who live nearby.

Mr Capewell said the investigation is ongoing and RAIB inspectors would stay on site at least until Saturday.

The first of seven victims of the Croydon tram crash has been identified.

Dane Chinnery, 19, died after the tram left the track and flipped on its side during the morning rush hour on Wednesday.

The 42-year-old driver, who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, has been released on police bail.

Meanwhile the investigation at the scene remains ongoing.

Six men and one woman died in the Croydon tram crash on Wednesday, British Transport Police have said.

Earlier on Thursday, Dane Chinnery, 19, was named as one those who died in the morning rush hour crash.

The identities of the other victims have not been released.

More than 50 people were injured when the tram left the track and flipped on its side.

A man travelling on the Croydon tram which derailed described the crash as "like something out of [the horror film] Final Destination".

Tom Dale, a friend of Dane Chinnery who has been named as one of the seven victims, said he saw the 19-year-old on the tram on Wednesday morning, but after coming round after blacking out in the crash he could not see Mr Chinnery anywhere.

Mr Dale, 20, continued that all he could see was a boot where Mr Chinnery had been sitting, adding he later learnt Mr Chinnery was trapped underneath the tram.

Mr Dale - who suffered bad bruising and other minor injuries in the crash - paid tribute to his friend as a "genuine lad", adding "he didn't deserve it, he was still quite young".

Croydon crash survivor Taiye Ajibola has described the terrifying moments the tram he was travelling on rolled over three times after it derailed, leaving seven people dead and injuring 50.

Mr Ajibola said he believed the tram was "speeding" as it approached the bend, adding "I thought it was going to stop but it couldn't."

Mr Ajibola - who was injured in the crash - described freeing himself and trying to help others, adding one person trapped in the tram pleaded with fellow passengers: "I'm still alive, don't step on me".

Meanwhile, St George's in Tooting said that three of the people seriously injured in the crash had undergone surgery at the hospital on Wednesday.

In a statement St George's said: "All three patients left theatre yesterday, and are continuing to be looked after by our surgical and medical teams.

"We would like to thank members of the public for their kind wishes, and for the support they have shown to the patients and staff at St George’s.

"We would also like to say thank you again to the various emergency services and agencies involved in managing yesterday’s incident."
