Rescue teams have located a group of missing schoolchildren in the Brecon Beacons and a helicopter has landed with them, but police are unable to confirm that the pupils are accounted for.

The children remain on the mountain with the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team while the operation continues.

Dyfed Powys Police said: "We cannot confirm that all in the group are accounted for."

Missing schoolchildren spotted from helicopter

The group of missing schoolchildren has been spotted from a helicopter, Brecon Mountain Rescue have said.

Mountain rescue volunteers are making their way to the site on foot as the helicopter is unable to land, they said.

A spokesman said: "I can confirm that three South Wales mountain rescue teams have been called to search for a group of 20 missing school children in the Dan yr Ogof area.

"A recent update from incident control has advised that the MCGA rescue helicopter from St Athan has spotted the group and is unable to land but that mountain rescue volunteers are making their way to the site on foot."

Police confirm search operation for missing children

Police have said concerns were raised about the missing children because of the weather conditions.

A police spokesman said: "Dyfed-Powys Police were made aware of a group of children missing in the Llyn y Fan Fach area at approximately 1pm.

"Concern was expressed for their welfare due to the inclement weather.

"Mountain Rescue Team are leading the search activity and the UK Coastguard helicopter is also assisting.

"The number of children in the group has not been confirmed."

Some of the schoolchildren lost on the Brecon Beacons have been found, a local landlord has told ITV News.

Andy Maglaras said mountain rescue had told him around 14 children had been found and were being brought to his pub, the Tafarn-y-Garreg, to recover.

Mr Maglaras said there had been a large rescue operation taking place since around 12.30pm.

"I think they found 14 kids and are bringing them down to the pub," he said. "A member of the rescue team asked if they could bring them here to get warm.

"There's about 10 rescue people over the road. The car park is full and a helicopter landed in a field behind me."
