One dead and three injured in knife attack at German train station

The suspect in a train station stabbing in Germany may not be capable of being held criminally responsible for the attack, investigators say.

Senior police official Lothar Koehler said that the suspect made a "rather confused impression" when questioned, and had taken off his shoes because "he felt bugs on his feet that had caused blisters and were generating intense heat."

He added that there are indications that the man may have taken drugs two days prior to the attack.

German Police have said there is no evidence a stabbing suspect who was arrested this morning had any accomplices or was part of any Islamic extremist network.

One person was killed and three injured in a knife attack at a train station near Munich, with witnesses reporting the suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the stabbings.

The man behind today's fatal train station attack in Germany had mental health and drug problems, AFP reported, citing the regional ministry.

"As to what extent there were other background factors, or whether this is more about questions of mental instability or drug addiction, still needs to be investigated," Bavaria state's interior minister Joachim Hermann earlier told BR24 television.

According to witnesses the attacker had shouted "Alahu Akbar" - Arabic for "God is great" - as he "indiscriminately" stabbed commuters with a 10-centimetre knife at Grafton station early this morning.

This led police to investigate an "Islamist motive" behind the attack, which has left one man dead and three more in hospital.

The suspect is:

• 27 years old
• A German national, who was born in Germany and does not have a migrant background
• From central Hesse state
• Not previously known to police
• Named locally as Paul H. (naming convention of suspects in Germany means the full surname is not released)

A knife attacker who killed a man and injured three others at train station in Germany this morning had "an apparent Islamist motive" and is "not very co-operative" with police, AFP reports.

The 27-year-old male attacker, a German national, began stabbing people at Grafing station, around 20 miles from Munich, at 4:50am local time.

One person was attacked in front of the train, while two cyclists also sustained minor injuries, Hans-Peter Kammerer, Spokesman for local Bavarian police said.

Witnesses had said he yelled "Allahu Akbar" ("God is Greatest") during the attack.

One man later died in hospital, where three more victims are being treated for seriously injuries.

Prosecutors said the "assailant made remarks at the scene of the crime that indicate a political motive - apparently an Islamist motive."

"We are still determining what the exact remarks were," a spokesman added.
