Huge crane collapse in central New York City kills at least one

At least one person has died and more have been injured after a huge crane collapsed in a New York City neighbourhood.

New York Mayor visits scene of crane collapse

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has visited the scene where a large crane collapsed in central Manhattan where he was briefed by the city's fire department.

In video footage posted by the NYPD, de Blasio can be seen walking along the cordoned off street and underneath part of the collapsed crane, as rubble and crushed cars can be seen in the background.

The person who died when a large crawler crane collapsed in lower Manhattan was "sitting in a parked car" when the accident happened, officials have confirmed.

We have one fatality, an individual that happened to be sitting in a parked car not associated with the work being done with the crane.

We have three individuals with injuries - two serious, one minor, and none life threatening as far as we know at this point.

The crane was reportedly being moved into a "secure position" as winds topped 20mph in New York at the time of the collapse.

Dramatic pictures show aftermath of NYC crane collapse

Pictures showing the destruction caused after a large crane collapsed in New York have been shared online by the city's fire department.

The images which show the crane lying across a closed off Manhattan street were released by the FDNY as officials confirmed the shocking accident had killed at least one person and left two others in a serious condition.

The crane collapsed at 40 Worth Street and West Broadway in the Tribeca area of lower Manhattan, but no cause has yet been established.
