'At least 28 killed' in Burkina Faso hotel siege

An American killed in the attack on a hotel and cafe in Burkina Faso has been identified as Michael James Riddering, State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

Mr Kirby added that the US embassy were in contact with local authorities and was working to assist American citizens.

The assault in the capital Ouagadougou by suspected Islamist militants left at least 28 people dead from around 18 countries.

Six Canadians were among the 23 killed in the Burkina Faso attack on a hotel in the capital city, Canada's prime minister said.

Also confirmed dead in the hotel siege are:

• one Dutch national
• two Swiss citizens
• and two French nationals

"They started to shoot at everyone," one woman who was in the cafe during the attack told ITV News.

"We dropped to the ground and as soon as anyone raised their heads they fired straight at them immediately.

We had to play dead. They shook people by the foot to see if they were alive or not. If they were alive, they shot."
