Further travel disruption feared as fog set to return for third day

Travel disruption has continued for a third day as flights have been cancelled and delayed at airports coping with the backlog caused by thick fog.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports warned flights could again be affected with departures delayed and cancelled overnight because of air traffic restrictions.

Passengers faced long airport queues as dense fog caused severe travel disruption, and flight cancellations, across the UK this morning.

People have been sharing their images of famous landmarks shrouded in dense fog as adverse weather conditions continue to cause travel disruption across the UK.

Dense fog has already clocked up 90,257 minutes of flight delays this morning, according to the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation.

According to the monitoring body delays have been experienced at airports including London, Manchester, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Berlin.

Travel disruption caused by heavy fog across the UK this morning has been affecting many commuters - including Sky News presenter Eamonn Holmes.

Holmes tweeted that he was unable to get to the studio because of the "pea souper".

Airports across the country are advising passengers to check with airlines to make sure flights are going ahead before they travel.

The advice has been issued as dense fog continues to cause travel disruption across the UK.

As fog causes multiple delays to flights across the UK, one passenger who was able to fly into the UK tweeted this extraordinary picture of the city's skyline covered in fog.

"Flew into foggy London. Views are beautiful - this is the Shard and all the towers in the city," Sarah Wells tweeted.

British Airways said the fog was affecting flights at Heathrow, Gatwick and London City Airports and advised passengers to check online for updates.
