Queen marks Magna Carta's 800th anniversary

A Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and Red Arrows fly-past have taken place over Runnymede Meadows in Surrey to mark the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta.

Earlier, the Queen and other senior royals attend a special event at the site where King John accepted the historic document that limited the power of the Crown on 15th June, 1215.

The Queen has unveiled a memorial plaque at Runnymede Meadows in Surrey, where the Magna Carta was sealed, to mark the 800th anniversary of the document.

Prime Minister David Cameron has said the Magna Carta was "revolutionary" in shaping the world and is "as relevant today" as it was eight centuries ago.

Speaking at a 800th anniversary event at Runnymede Meadows in Surrey where the historic document was sealed, he said the "Magna Carta is something every person in Britain should be proud of".

"On this historic day, let us pledge to keep those principles alight, let us keep Magna Carta alive, because as those barons showed all those years ago, what we do today will shape the world for many, many years to come."

The Duke of Cambridge has arrived at an event in Runnymede, Surrey, to mark the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.

The document which restricted the rights of the monarchy for the first time was sealed at Runnymede Meadows in June 1215.

The Duke unveiled a plaque at the dedication of artist Hew Locke's "The Jurors" installation commissioned to mark the anniversary.

The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of Cambridge will all visit Runnymede today on the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.

The document which restricted the rights of the monarchy for the first time was sealed at Runnymede Meadows in June 1215.

Only four copies of the original document are known to survive, with two housed at the British Library and the others by Lincoln and Salisbury Cathedrals

The Royal barge Gloriana led a flotilla of boats along part of the river Thames today to mark the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta.

Around 200 boats travelled in the procession as it made its way along the river to Runnymede, Surrey where King John accepted the historic document that limited the power of the Crown on 15, June, 1215.

As part of today's events a statue of the Queen was also unveiled in Runnymede to mark tomorrow's anniversary.
