Former Tottenham and England striker Jimmy Greaves faces a "long, slow road to recovery" after suffering a severe stroke, his wife has said.
Greaves, 75, was rushed to hospital on Sunday and remains in intensive care.
In a statement, his wife Irene said he was aware of the seriousness of the stroke he suffered.
She said: "Jimmy is having to do what he is told, and understands the seriousness of what has happened to him. It is going to be a long, slow road to recovery and he is in the best possible hands.
"On behalf of Jimmy and our family, We would like to thank the many thousands of you who have voiced your support and concern. We would greatly appreciate it if the media would allow us privacy for what is going to be a long period of rehabilitation."

Players rally in support of Jimmy Greaves after stroke
The world of football has rallied around former England legend Jimmy Greaves after he suffered a severe stroke on Sunday.
The former Tottenham, Chelsea and west Ham striker's agent thanked the "thousands" of people who have wished his client, now in intensive care, a speedy recovery.
Amongst the messages for the 75-year-old were those from fellow former England players, including Sir Geoff Hurst, Gary Lineker and his former TV co-host Ian St John, who is said to be "devastated" at the news.
Greaves was due to be inducted into the Tottenham Hotspur Hall of Fame on 13 May at a sell-out ceremony at White Hart Lane.

Jimmy Greaves is set to be inducted into the Spurs Hall of Fame a week on Wednesday.
Club legend Greaves suffered a severe stroke on Sunday and is currently in intensive care in hospital.
The striker played a key part in Spurs' successful side in the 1960s, scoring in their FA Cup success in 1962 and their European Cup Winners' Cup win over Atletico Madrid.
During his nine years at White Hart Lanes, Greaves scored 266 goals in 379 matches for Spurs.
Greaves also netted 44 goals in 57 England games, the fourth-highest total of all time.
