Ofcom will not probe Great British Bake Off's 'bingate'

Ofcom will not investigate The Great British Bake Off's "bingate" row after more than 800 viewers complained about the alleged sabotage of contestant Iain Watters' Baked Alaska.

The 31-year-old bearded baker lost his cool when his pudding melted after rival contestant Diana Beard took it out of the freezer - leading Mr Watters to throw it in the bin.

This whipped up anger amongst viewers who accused Mrs Beard, 69, of sabotaging the pudding.

She later quit the show due to ill health just after the episode was filmed.

But an Ofcom spokesman said: "Having assessed viewers' complaints received to date, they do not raise issues warranting further investigation under Ofcom's rules."

Mr Watters was voted off the show after presenting the judges with a bin when asked to show his dessert.

But he hinted he could make a comeback after Mrs Beard's departure telling BBC's Newsnight: "You will have to watch next week."

Watters added that he doesn't hold a grudge against competitor Diana Beard after the controversy dubbed "bingate".

He said he didn't blame Beard for taking his Baked Alaska out of the freezer, a move he says was made "in the heat of the moment".

He said the public support following his exit from the show had been "crazy" - pointing in particular to the #JusticeforIain campaign that trended on Twitter.

Watters was seen throwing the remains of his bake in the bin before storming off set.

Beard fell ill just before the making of the following episode and had to withdraw on medical grounds.

“Diana will not appear in the rest of the series as she fell ill ahead of filming episode 5 earlier this year,” a BBC spokesman said.

More than 500 people have complained to the broadcaster over the incident.
