Actors pay tribute to Lord Attenborough at the Emmys

British actors paid tribute to late actor and director Richard Attenborough at the Emmy Awards last night.

Chiwetel Ejiofor said his death was "tragic", adding that he was a "great champion of so many causes".

Downton Abbey actress Joanne Froggatt described Attenborough as an "absolute gentleman", while Minnie Driver said the director was one of "our British treasures" and "will be missed greatly".

Chelsea footballer John Terry has described the late actor Richard Attenborough as a "true legend and a real gentleman".

Attenborough was a dedicated fan of the club and Terry says he would "often come over after games and say 'hi' and 'well done' and 'congratulations'."

The head of Unicef, the United Nations agency for children, has paid tribute to Richard Attenborough describing him as a "great soul".

Ariana Richards, the actress who played Richard Attenborough's granddaughter in Jurassic Park, has said the late actor was a "light in my life".

She told ITV News that he used to spend breaks in filming telling her stories, and that she saw him as a grandfather figure off as well as on the screen.

Lord Richard Attenborough "was a force for good" who stuck with Chelsea Football Club through dark times, a statement from the club said.

Labour leader Ed Miliband has described Richard Attenborough's death as a "sad day for the film world and the Labour movement".

Sir Ben Kingsley, star of Richard Attenborough's Oscar-winning epic Gandhi, has revealed his sadness at the death of the filmmaker.

"He placed in me an absolute trust and in turn I placed an absolute trust in him and grew to love him," said Sir Ben.

"I along with millions of others whom he touched through his life and work will miss him dearly."

Steven Spielberg says Richard Attenborough was "passionate about everything in life" after his fellow filmmaker died aged 90.

The Jurassic Park director, who chose Lord Attenborough to be "the perfect ringmaster to bring the dinosaurs back to life" in the films, said he is just one person in a long line of "Dickie's" fans.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which awarded Lord Richard Attenborough as Best Director for his epic film Gandhi, has paid tribute to the late star on Twitter.
