A second man has been arrested in Northern Ireland in connection with the death of a man and discovery of 34 other immigrants in a shipping container at Tilbury Docks, Essex Police said.

Second man arrested over Tilbury Docks container

A second man has been arrested in Northern Ireland in connection with the death of a man and discovery of 34 other immigrants in a shipping container at Tilbury Docks, Essex Police said.

The police statement said the man, who is aged 33 from Londonderry, was arrested shortly after 1pm today.

Home Office 'providing support' after Tilbury docks find

The 34 people found alive in a shipping container at Tilbury docks are in the care of the Home Office after being interviewed by police and are in the process of applying for asylum in the UK.

"We are continuing to provide expert support, along with the National Crime Agency, to the Essex Police investigation into the discovery," a Home Office spokesperson said.

"This tragic incident is a reminder of the devastating human consequences of illegal migration and we will do all we can to help bring those responsible to justice," they added.

The Home Office does not comment on individual cases and any decision made will not be announced publicly.

Essex Police 'very grateful' for PSNI officers' help

Essex Police said it was "very grateful" to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) for its assistance in arresting a man in connection with the death of an Afghan immigrant aboard a shipping container found at Tilbury docks.

This is a fast-moving investigation which has already involved a number of police forces and law enforcement agencies from across the United Kingdom and Europe.

It is thought the 35 people found at Tilbury docks had travelled by lorry from Afghanistan before spending 18 hours inside the container as it travelled from Zeebrugge, Belgium.

Man arrested after Afghan man's death at Tilbury docks

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter and facilitating illegal entry into the UK following the death of an Afghan immigrant aboard a shipping container found at Tilbury docks on Saturday.

The man is aged 34 and comes from Limavady in Northern Ireland. Police say he was arrested just after midday at Banbridge on the A1.

He is due to be questioned by Essex Police and Northern Ireland police officers are currently searching his home.

Dead Afghan's family looked on as his life slipped away

The wife and children of the Afghan man found dead in a shipping container in Tilbury Docks watched him die in front of their eyes.

Translator Kamaljit Singh Mataharu told ITV News he had "tears in his eyes" as the dead man's children told him what happened.

He said: "The little boy said to me that he tried to wake his dad but he didn't respond and then they found out he was dead."

The cause of the man's death is still unknown despite a post-mortem being carried out yesterday.

Afghan immigrants are all claiming asylum in UK

The 34 people found in a shipping container in Tilbury docks on Saturday are now in the process of claiming asylum in the UK.

The Homes Office said the men, women and children, aged from one to 72, were now in their care while their cases are being considered.

In a statement a Home Office spokesman said: "Following the conclusion of police interviews, the individuals involved have now been passed into our care.

"All 34 are now in the process of claiming asylum in the UK and we are providing accommodation and support to those who require it while their cases are considered.

"This tragic incident is a reminder of the devastating human consequences of illegal migration and we will do all we can to help bring those responsible to justice.

“The UK takes its international obligations extremely seriously and has a proud history of offering protection to those who need it. ”

Post-mortem on dead Afghan immigrant 'inconclusive'

Tests on the body of an immigrant found dead inside a shipping container at Tilbury docks have failed to establish how he died.

The man, who is believed to be in his 40s, was one of 35 people discovered in the container on Saturday.

A statement from Essex Police said inquiries would continue after a post-mortem carried out yesterday proved inconclusive.

Superintendent Trevor Roe said: "Tragically, one man died on the voyage and the investigation into his death is now being led by us.

"These people were found in an awful situation and our main priority is to look after them and ensure they are now safe following what would have been a horrendous ordeal."
