Savile report: Police probing link to child death at care home

The report into Jimmy Savile's prolific sexual abuse "has not gone far enough" and someone needs to be held to account for the disgraced children entertainer's behaviour, said the investigative journalist who broke the story.

Mark Williams Thomas told Good Morning Britain it was "inconceivable" senior managers at either Broadmoor psychiatric hospital or Leeds general infirmary did not know what Savile was up to.

Shocking details have been revealed by new investigations into the crimes of Jimmy Savile about the extent of the abuse he inflicted on NHS patients. Reports into his behaviour at 28 hospitals and institutions speak of "truly awful" sexual abuse over four decades.

He abused victims aged from just five to 75 and even dead bodies in a mortuary at Leeds General. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has apologised and said Savile's actions "shake our country to the core".

A transgender man abused by Jimmy Savile has told ITV News he still has nightmares about his ordeal.

The Health Secretary today apologised to victims after further details of Savile's crimes at NHS hospitals across the country were released.

"I still have nightmares. A lot of people would think 'there's nothing wrong with him' but that's not true - I still have nightmare. I still dream I'm locked up," Steven George said.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt admitted today that it was not certain that the current system could prevent "another Savile" from working with children and in hospital trusts.

He made the comments in the House of Commons as he apologised on behalf of the Government and the NHS for the prolific abuse undertaken by Jimmy Savile across more than 30 institutions over several decades.

Responding to concerns raised by Labour over figures that showed the number of people barred from working with children had dropped by 75% in the last three years, Mr Hunt said that work was ongoing to examine the reason for the significant drop.

Mr Hunt said: "I think it is important to say the disclosure and barring scheme - and I've given this a lot of thought - it's likely in the current environment, were we to have another Savile, that it would have barred him from working with children and working in trusts but it's not certain.

"It's not certain because he was never convicted of a crime so the CRB checks would not have stopped that, but the disclosure and barring scheme does have the possibility of preventing people working with children and vulnerable adults even if they haven't committed a crime."

Shadow health secretary Andy Burnham called for the Government to implement a code of conduct outlining the "appropriate relationship" between the NHS and celebrities or business backers.

Leicestershire Police are carrying out an investigation into allegations that Jimmy Savile was involved in the death of a child at a children's care home near Loughborough in the 1960s. The allegation came from an informant who also claimed to have been abused by someone called "Jimmy".

When being interviewed as part of Operation Yewtree, the informant said that a child who lived at Roecliffe Manor in Woodhouse Eaves was seen being dragged away by "Jimmy" and a friend. The following day he was told that child had died. Investigators have passed their findings to the police.

Jimmy Savile was a "callous, opportunistic, wicked predator" who abused people who had a right to be safe, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said.

Victims were let down as "people and institutions turned a blind eye" to Savile's crimes, Hunt said.

Hunt said the whole country will share a "deep sense of revulsion" at the details of Savile's crimes.

"He was a sickening and prolific sexual abuser who repeatedly exploited the trust of a nation for his own vile purposes," Hunt told MPs as he apologised on behalf of the government and NHS.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has apologised on behalf of the government and NHS for letting down the victims of Jimmy Savile, after a series of investigations found Savile had subjected patients in hospitals to "sickening" sexual abuse.

"Today I want to apologise on behalf of the Government and the NHS to all the victims who were abused by Savile in NHS-run institutions," Mr Hunt told MPs.

"We let them down badly and however long ago it may have been, many of them are still reliving the pain they went through.

"If we cannot undo the past, I hope that honesty and transparency about what happened can at least alleviate some of the suffering, it's the least we owe them."

A woman who was sexually assaulted in a hospital basement by Jimmy Savile when she was a teenage patient said she feels "betrayed" by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The now 57-year-old was abused by the disgraced entertainer in Leeds General Infirmary in 1973, when he was volunteering as a porter at the hospital.

She said wants an apology from the trust and reassurances such abuse can never happen again.

The woman, who was an in-patient at the time, said that she had attempted to report the abuse to nurses, but they laughed off her complaints.

"In my opinion, the hospital let me down," she told the Press Association. "They let me down by allowing that to happen, but they also let me down two years ago when they didn't acknowledge it had happened."

"The fact that they just didn't even reply to my emails until I really bombarded them, and then they did. That's like I was betrayed twice, let down twice, the fact they didn't believe me."

The family of Jimmy Savile say they are devastated by the findings of reports into the disgraced TV star's behaviour at hospitals across the UK.
