Footage shows spectators scramble during rally crash

Footage filmed by a spectator at the Jim Clark Rally in the Scottish Borders shows a car crashing off the road and on to the ditch, forcing spectators to run out of the way.

Three rally spectators were killed and two seriously injured during the rally on Saturday afternoon after a car ploughed into the crowd.

Family tributes to Jim Clark Rally victims

The families of two of the spectators, who were killed at the Jim Clark Rally, have paid tribute to their loved ones.

The family of John Leonard Stern, 71, said: “Len was a special uncle who was well-loved by the family. His death is really tragic but he died watching the sport that he loved. Our thoughts are with the driver and his family during this difficult time.”

Iain Provan's family said: "The family would like to thank race officials, members of the public and the emergency services for their assistance following yesterday’s tragic incident.

"We would also like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and ask that our privacy be respected at this very difficult time."

At this time there is no family tribute or photo of Elizabeth Allan who died in the same incident on Saturday 31 May.

Investigations continue today into the deaths of three rally spectators who were killed when a car ploughed into a crowd like a "bowling ball hitting skittles".

Two men and one woman were killed in what was the second of two crashes during the Jim Clark Rally in the Scottish Borders on Saturday afternoon.

MacAskill: 'Thoughts with friends and families affected'

Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill and Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland, the top prosecutor, will receive a briefing from police in Kelso tomorrow over the Jim Clark Rally deaths.

Mr MacAskill said: "The Jim Clark Rally is a long-standing event and has been part of the local community for over 40 years. This incident will have come as a tremendous shock to the local community and wider motoring family.

Two men hurt at Jim Clark crash 'serious but stable'

Two 61-year-old men who were injured in the Jim Clark Rally crash yesterday, are in a serious but stable condition at Edinburgh Royal Hospital.

One of the men attending the race was with three of those that died yesterday, the other was injured during an earlier incident.

Salmond: Jim Clark Rally crash 'extraordinary incident'

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond has told ITV News the Jim Clark Rally crash that left three people dead and two others critically injured was "an extraordinary incident of great severity".

Mr Salmond said: "These are tragic circumstances and obviously all our hearts go out to the people who have been killed and injured.

"Given the extent of this tragedy, people can be reassured the [investigation] process will be complete and thorough".

Jim Clark Rally 'as safe as possible'

Organisers of the Jim Clark Rally say the event is 'as safe as possible' after three people were killed during the Scottish Borders rally yesterday.

Two men and a woman died when a car collided with spectators at Little Swinton near Coldstream at around 4pm on Saturday.

Alan Johnstone, Media Manager for Jim Clark Rally, said: "We try our best to get it as safe as possible. You'll never get it 100 percent by it's very nature."

Police working 'to remove bodies' from Jim Clark Rally

Police are working to remove the bodies of three people killed after a car ploughed into spectators at a rally.

Two men and s woman were killed when the car came off the road in the second of two crashes that occurred during the Jim Clark Rally in the Scottish Borders.

Superintendent Phil O'Kane of Police Scotland said officers were working to "forensically and sympathetically remove the deceased" from the scene.

He added: "We secured the scene last night, it was fading light, and the practicalities meant body removal was not an option, so they will be recovered over the course of today and police are working on that.

"We will also ensure we contact the next of kin and we will put in place all necessary family support for them."

Three killed at Jim Clark Rally from Greater Glasgow

Three people killed at the Jim Clark Rally were all from the Greater Glasgow area.

They were a 73-year-old man, a 63-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man and were all spectators at the event in the Scottish Borders.

Two people remain in a critical critical in hospital following yesterday's crashes.
