As most people are at home eating their Christmas dinner, hundreds of sea creatures will also be eating theirs.

It was a white Christmas for Buxton, Derbyshire after overnight snowfall in the hills around the Peak District town.

Swimmers take chilly Christmas dip in Hyde Park

Hardy swimmers in central London took part in an annual Christmas morning race in the chilly waters of Hyde Park's Serpentine lake.

The Serpentine Swimming Club, which organises the 100-yard race, bans wetsuits, meaning anyone joining in can only wear a normal swimming costume or trunks.

As the water temperature was around 5C, most participants did not hang around long after finishing the swim - with the quickest completing the course in around a minute.

The Peter Pan Cup was awarded to this year's winner, Kristy McIntyre, originally from Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, for coming first in the handicapped race.

It was named in honour of the book's author JM Barrie, who used to sponsor the cup. The Christmas Day race was first held in 1864.

Welby to highlight 'injustices' in Christmas Day sermon

The Archbishop of Canterbury will use his first Christmas Day sermon to highlight the "injustices" facing Britain's poor and victims of conflicts around the world.

The Most Rev Justin Welby will call on Christians to "challenge the causes of poverty" despite signs of an economic recovery in the UK.

Mr Welby will tell the congregation at Canterbury Cathedral: "Even in a recovering economy, Christians, the servants of a vulnerable and poor saviour, need to act to serve and love the poor; they need also to challenge the causes of poverty."

The Archbishop earlier posted a Christmas video message on the photo-sharing website Instagram.

In the message, he said: "Christmas means that, through Jesus, God shows unconditionally that he loves us. I pray that he gives you a very blessed Christmas."

The Ship, which will be away over the Christmas period, had been hoarding away in her freezers 80kg of Turkey along with 20kg of Beef and Gammon, 120kg of potatoes, 30kg broccoli, 30kg carrots, 150 yorkshire puddings, 300 pigs in blankets, 20kg brussel sprouts and to top it off, 15 Christmas cakes.

The Metropolitan Police Air Support Unit tweeted this picture of what appears to be Santa in his sleigh, although the pilot's identity has yet to be confirmed.

Children gleeful after delivery of 10 tonnes of snow

Three sisters from Kirkcaldy in Fife have had their dreams of a white Christmas answered after winning a competition to win 10 tonnes of snow.

The bumper load of snow arrived this morning and was shovelled into the family's garden, where the children set about building a snowman and going sledging.

Presents donated to 10-year-old girl after burglary

People are donating Christmas presents to a 10-year-old girl after her presents were stolen during a burglary at her family home in Timperly in Manchester.

The family's vehicles, mobile phones and children's Christmas parents were all taken during the burglary last night.

Greater Manchester Police appealed to people to come forward with gifts to help the family.

On Twitter this afternoon, they wrote:

"If you see us shopping we are buying for this little girl and we are not doing our personal shopping! #communityspirit "
