Pride of Britain awards

Carol Vorderman has told Daybreak that Katie Piper, who was scarred for life in a horrific acid attack organised by her violent ex-boyfriend, is "an amazing young woman".

Katie, 29, from London, was given a special recognition award at the Pride of Britain Awards last night.

Fourteen-year-old Jack Carroll from Yorkshire, who has Cerebral Palsy, has told Daybreak he "is very excited about" receiving a teenager of courage award at the The Pride of Britain Awards.

Jack said: "I've got aches and pains like we all have. It isn't too bad. It gives me an excuse to get up and lark about."

Britain's London 2012 stars will be honoured tonight at an awards ceremony to celebrate the country's unsung heroes.

Olympic and Paralympic gold medal winners will receive a special recognition award for their achivements this summer at the Daily Mirror's Pride of Britain Awards.

Doreen Lawrence, the mother of murdered black teenager Stephen, will also be presented with a lifetime achievement award for her tireless campaign for justice for her son.

It took more than 18 years for Stephen's killers to be convicted in January this year, while an inquiry into police corruption during the investigation of the racist murder was ordered in June.

Doreen has opened the Stephen Lawrence Centre which offers free courses in IT, creative arts and multimedia.
