Pendleton's father attacks 'mockery' of rule which disqualified Victoria

Max Pendleton, father of Victoria, who was disqualified from the women's team sprint finals for an illegal changeover, has told ITV News the ultimate result made a "mockery" of the rule.

"When you've got a situation which eventually developed into the Chinese being relegated [as well as GB] so that in reality, the Germans have won the event with the third-fastest potential time, it does make a bit of a mockery of the overlap rule," he said.

Pendleton going for cycling gold but what is keirin?

Britain's Victoria Pendleton will be going for cycling gold in the women's keirin today. Here's a guide to what keirin is:

  • The race takes place over eight laps of the track.
  • Six riders will follow a motorised bike around the track until the final 600m where they will be let loose and allowed to race one another.
  • The motorbike ranges in speed from 15mph to 28mph in the women's event.

The 31-year-old continues her final competition before retirement with her second event, the keirin.

She won the world title in 2007, but the physical event is a lottery and she may be outmuscled by bigger opponents.

Britain aiming for two velodrome golds

  • Men's Team Pursuit - 5.59pm: Ed Clancy, Pete Kennaugh, Steven Burke and Geraint Thomas set a world record in qualifying yesterday - shaving a second off the time they set in Melbourne in April. Australia will provide the sternest test to the quartet but qualified three seconds slower than Britain.
  • Women's Keirin - 6.38pm: Victoria Pendleton will be hoping for a gold medal in this event after the disappointment of being disqualified in yesterday's team sprint.
