The newly-inaugurated French president Francois Hollande and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel have underlined their desire for Greece to stay in the eurozone and were prepared to introduce measures to help growth in the country.

Merkel and Hollande cover the 'European agenda' in talks

French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are giving a joint newsconference in Berlin.

Ms Merkel has said that they have got to know each other and have covered some important points. The Chancellor said they had covered the 'European agenda.'

She said they were confident that they would solve these problems. Ms Merkel also said she hoped Greece would stay within the eurozone.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed France's new Socialist President Francois Hollande to Germany this evening.

He arrived approximately an hour and a half late to their meeting as his plane was hit by lightning en route to Berlin.

New French President Francois Hollande is due to arrive in Berlin to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel for the first time.

Troops have lined the red carpet outside the Chancellery where the two leaders will meet.

President Hollande is late for the meeting as his plane had to return to Paris after being hit by lightning.
