Judge: Zimmerman engaged in a 'material falsehood'

MSNBC is reporting that Judge Kenneth Lester said George Zimmerman was engaged in a "material falsehood" about his finances. He did not tell the court about the $135,000 raised through a website when bail was posted at $150,000 on April 20.

Prosecutors argued that Zimmerman had "misrepresented, misled, and deceived the court" during the original bail hearing not only about his finances, but about whether he had two passports.

Zimmerman's defence lawyer Mark O'Mara admitted his client did have a second passport, but said: "It's not devious or inappropriate" to have a second one if the first is lost or stolen.

He said Zimmerman filed for a second passport after mistakenly thinking his original one was lost.

The attorney who represents the family of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager shot by George Zimmerman said the family were "praying and trying to trust" the judicial process that allowed Zimmerman to be released from jail.

Attorney Ben Crump told Reuters: "They were heavy-hearted that the killer of their son was released from jail. However, they hope that his freedom is temporary because the pain he has caused their family is permanent. They're never going to get Trayvon back".

Family's anger after killer granted bail

The family of Trayvon Martin have reacted angrily to news that his killer has been granted bail.

George Zimmerman is facing trial for second-degree murder after shooting the black unarmed teenager dead in Florida, in what he claims was self-defence.

The lawyer for Trayvon's family, Benjamin Crump, said 'they were devastated' that Zimmerman might soon be out of jail, after saying for the first time, that he was sorry for their loss.

And it was devastating that he got to give a self-serving apology to help him get a bond.

They were very outraged at that.
