Dockyard to mark HMS Ocelot's 50th anniversary

Chatham's Historic Dockyard will this weekend celebrate the 50th anniversary of the launch of the last vessel to built on site - the submarine HMS Ocelot. It effectively marked the end of shipbuilding at Chatham which started in the 16th Century.

50th anniversary of HMS Ocelot

Submariners will gather this weekend to mark the launch half a century ago of the last Royal Navy warship built in one of the South's biggest dockyards. HMS Ocelot was launched from Chatham in May 1962 and ended a tradition of Navy shipbuilding stretching back 400 years.

The dockyard of course is now a major visitor attraction and is also launching a new exhibition about the golden age of steam, steel and submarines. Derek Johnson reports.
