Family say sentence will not send strong message

The mother of a girl who was killed in a crash on the A34 has urged people to take the use of mobile phones behind the wheel more seriously.

Kate Houghton spoke outside Reading Crown Court after the sentencing

Kate Houghton's daughter Aimee was travelling with Tracey Houghton, 45, and her two sons Josh Houghton, 11 and Ethan Houghton,13, when a lorry ploughed into their stationary car.

Tomasz Kroker, 30, was today jailed for ten years for causing the crash in August.

The court had heard that Kroker was so distracted by his phone that he barely looked at the road for almost a kilometre.

Passing sentence, Judge Maura McGowan said his attention had been so poor that he "might as well have had his eyes closed".

In a statement outside court, Ms Houghton said the sentence would not send a strong enough message to those who use a mobile phone while driving.
