Record numbers pound the streets for Brighton Marathon - extended report

It's now the second biggest marathon in the country. Almost 11,000 runners have pounded the streets of Brighton and Hove today.

Zoe Ball was on hand to wave the chequered flag and, as Andy Dickenson reports, the sun and the whole city came out to cheer the competitors on.

Andy speaks to Zoe, race founder Tim Hutchings, Olympic medal winner Brendan Foster, race winner Duncan Maiyo and local runner Thomas Roach.

Brighton marathon: Winners cross the finish line

Duncan Mayio has won the Brighton Marathon, just outside the course record.

The reigning champion came in with a time of 2:09:54, a minute before the second placed Raymond Chemungor.

Edwin Kiptoo was third.

Perfect conditions for Brighton half marathon

Eleven thousand runners are under way at the Brighton half marathon, with many thousands more cheering them on.

Local celebrity Zoe Ball fired the starting gun at 9.15 this morning, to get the mix of elite runners and charity racers under way.

Zoe is representing the Motor Neurone Disease Association, who tweeted this picture of her interview with Meridian reporter Andy Dickenson.

ITV Meridian's Luke Castiglione was among the crowds and filmed the opening parade and elite runners during the opening stages.

The race starts at Preston Park, goes down to the seafront and back up to The Level, and then south again before heading our eastwards to beyond the Marina and turning back Westwards as far as Shoreham power station, and then finishing at Madeira Drive.
