Serious accident causing tailbacks on the M40

Road users in the Banbury area are advised that lanes 1 and 2 on the northbound M40 are closed between junctions 11 and 12 following a fatal crash earlier.

Emergency services are currently on the scene. The lanes will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so, but this may not be until the evening rush hour.

Long delays are expected while we work to reopen to road fully. Drivers planning to use this section of the M40 are advised to avoid the area if at all possible, or plan their journeys and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

The driver of the van who is believed to be in his mid 20’s has died at the scene, the passenger who is also believed to be in her 20’s has sustained life changing injuries and is being treated at hospital.

One lane has re-opened on the M40 northbound following this morning's fatal collision.

The M40 in Warwickshire is closed northbound between J11 (Banbury) and J12 (Gaydon), due to a fatal accident.

A signed diversion is in place. Traffic should leave the M40 at J11 and follow the hollow circle diversion symbol.

Drivers are advised to expect delays and to consider alternative routes or delaying their journeys.
