Police issue safety message after driver seen playing guitar behind the wheel

A photograph of a person apparently playing a guitar while driving on the A27 near Chichester has been circulating on social media.

No formal complaint has been made to Sussex Police.

"I have seen the photograph. Unfortunately there is no vehicle registration number, nor is it clear if the person with the guitar is actually the driver. However, it is perhaps an opportunity to underline the message that motorists should never do anything that distracts them from driving while on the move or in traffic."

A motorist has been spotted strumming away on a guitar while driving down a busy dual carriageway.

The motorist, who has not been named, was snapped by bus passenger Nichola Carr on the A27 near Chichester, West Sussex.

The driver was wearing a suit as he slapped a tune on what appeared to be a five-string Warwick bass guitar worth approximately £500.

Nichola said: “I did not know you could drive and play the guitar.”

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), said: “You cannot drive and play the guitar at the same time.

“We always say you cannot do two things at once if one of them is driving – this is the first time I have heard of someone playing guitar at the wheel.”
