Storm leaves trail of damage in South

Southern Electric have announced that there are 350 homes remaining without power, as 450 homes have been restored over the past few days.

The properties without power are in rural areas where Southern Electric say the access has proved 'particularly challenging'.

The areas currently left without power are:

Surrey: Milford, Elstead, Cutmill, Hindhead and Godalming

Hampshire: Selbourne and Liss

West Sussex: Bedham, Pallingham, Fittleworth, Rudgewick and Heyshott.

The Environment Agency has urged residents across the South to check flood warnings in their area as more rain is forecast next week.

Rain on Sunday and Monday morning could cause further flooding in south-west England where river levels are high and the ground is already saturated.

Over a thousand homes have been flooded throughout England while flood defences have protected more than 80,000 properties.

High water levels on the river Medway and Stour in Kent will cause continued flooding and travel disruption.

Craig Woolhouse, the Environment Agency's head of flood incident management, said: "Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by flooding over Christmas. Our teams remain out on the ground working around the clock to protect communities from flooding.

"With more wet weather expected early next week we are monitoring rivers and working to protect communities from flooding with our partners in the emergency services and local authorities"

The leader of Kent County Council was angrily confronted today about the county's emergency plan following the storm damage earlier this week. Cllr Paul Carter visited Yalding the day after Prime Minister David Cameron was confronted in the same village about the lack of council services.

The Environment Agency have confirmed that 12 flood warnings and 51 flood alerts remain in force across the South East.

The clean up is underway for residents in Kent whose properties were damaged in the Christmas Day storms.

UK Power Networks said 663 customers in the area were still without power today.

"Due to the severity of the storm damage it may take until the end of the week to restore power supplies to the final single premises affected in these areas, though work is continuing to reconnect most of the remaining supplies as quickly as possible," a spokesman said.

UK Power Networks say those left without electricity may not be reconnected "until the end of the week" due to the "severity of the storm damage".

Electricity North West said 1,600 customers had still been left without power in Cumbria after more than 20,000 properties had their electricity restored.

UK Power Networks said 663 customers in Kent, 326 in Sussex and 97 in Surrey remained without power today.

Southern Electric have confirmed today that 500 homes across our region remain without power.

Teams worked late into the night and were on site from 6am this morning to restore 300 homes cut from the national grid following the storm damage.

Southern Electric expect all customers to have their electricity restored by tonight.

The areas that are still affected are:

Surrey: Milford, Elstead, Cutmill, Hindhead and Godalming

Hampshire: Liss and Selbourne

West Sussex: Bedham, Pallingham, Fittleworth, Rudgewick and Heyshott.

UK Power Networks, which owns electricity lines and cables in the south east said it will almost triple its compensation for those affected by long-term power cuts. Last night 1,132 properties in Kent, more than 225 in Surrey and nearly 400 in Sussex were still without power.

Director of customer services Matt Rudling said: 'This is such a difficult time of year for people to be without power and so many families have also been flooded out of their homes. Our hearts go out to our customers and we have been trying different ways tohelp them.

'As a gesture of goodwill UK Power Networks has decided to boost the industry standard payment from £27 to £75 for customers who are without power for 48-60 hours including Christmas Day, and additional payments will be made to any customers off supply for longer up to a maximum of £432.'
