Tornado hits Hayling Island

Police officers are on Hayling Island this morning following reports of disruption due to what is believed to have been a mini tornado overnight.

The clean up operation continues in Hayling Island today after freak weather struck yesterday morning.

Police received dozens of calls regarding damage to homes, vehicles, power lines and beach huts.

Homes have been damaged by a "tornado" which struck Hampshire this morning. Properties on Hayling Island were hit during high winds - one person described the experience as "horrendous".

Police received calls regarding vehicles, power lines and beach huts, which had been affected. Martin Dowse has the story.

A mini-tornado has hit Hayling Island at around 8am this morning causing some damage to properties in Blackthorn Road and Ilex Walk. There are no reported injuries at this time. Emergency Services are at the scene and Havant Borough Council (HBC) are working with Hampshire County Council Highways to clean up the debris. HBC building control officers are assessing the damage to the affected properties and more will be known once inspections have been carried out.
