Man dies from 'legal high'

A Kent man who died after slashing his arms during a "legal high" at Bestival was found to suffer a paranoid reaction to the drugs.

Daniel Parks, from Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, went to the festival in Isle of Wight with his wife where he took the substance called Magic Crystals.

An inquest held at Newport, Isle of Wight, on Monday found the legal high was in fact a prohibited substance believed to be 4-Methylethcathinone.

Daniel and his wife consumed the drugs on Thursday September, 6 last year and died in hospital on Sunday September, 9 at 10.32am.

The man was described as having a paranoid reaction to the drugs and was found by his wife in their campervan having several wounds to his arms with a kitchen knife.

He was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Newport where he died as a result of blood loss caused by the deep cut to his arms.

Isle of Wight Coroner, Caroline Sumeray, said: "He had purchased what he believed to be 'legal highs' via the internet prior to attending the festival. Unbeknown to him, the 'magic crystals' he purchased were in fact a prohibited substance."
