Thieves have stolen a special Olympic dressing put up in Petersfield for the historic Olympic Torch Relay through the village.

The purple London 2012 branded 'skrim' banners, which were attached to the railings at The Causeway, and The Square, have been cut away and stolen.

The banners were originally put up to help raise spirits in the town for the Torch Relay visit and were to stay in place for the duration of Olympic and Paralympic Games.

EHDC Community Manager, Mike O'Mahoney, who's project team organised the torch celebrations, said:

“A lot of time, money and effort has gone into decorating the town with official London2012 Olympic street dressing. Especially to add some colour to the town and create excitement for residents and visitors, and to really make Petersfield feel part of the Olympic celebrations.

“We are asking people to contact the police on 101 if they have any information about the whereabouts of the missing street dressing. The police are taking this incident very seriously.

“Petersfield residents must be dismayed by the thieves' selfish actions. “
