Murder inquiry launched into death of 71-year-old woman attacked in Stubbington cemetery
Police have launched a murder inquiry into the death of a 71-year-old woman who died after being assaulted in a cemetery in Hampshire.
The attack happened at Crofton Cemetery in Lychgate Green, Stubbington, on Monday afternoon (24 July), with the victim being pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Hampshire police say a 66-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
A force spokesman said: "We have launched a murder investigation after a serious assault took place in Stubbington.
"We were called to Crofton Cemetery at Lychgate Green at 3.47pm on Monday July 24 after a 71-year-old woman had been assaulted there.
"She was treated initially by police officers and our colleagues from South Central Ambulance Service, but was pronounced dead a short time later.
"Her family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
"A scene will remain on at the cemetery while officers carry out enquiries.
"A 66-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody at this time."
