Meet the three camels coming to Salisbury Cathedral this Christmas

It's not what you'd expect to see in one of the south's largest cathedrals, but today in Salisbury there were some very unusual visitors.

Three camels were the stars of the show today as rehearsals took place for the cathedral's annual Christmas Eve service.

The three camels are taking part in the Nativity, part of the Family Service at Salisbury Cathedral at 15:30 on 24 December.

The three are Bactrian camels which are from China and outer Mongolia

The camels, owned by Lady Chichester, are domestic Bactrian Camels and have two humps.

Timujin is known as the grand old man of the trio, while his companions Lena and Ivan are just four years old.

Organisers say the animals are very friendly and well used to public appearances. They often get involved for events in support of charities including the Diocesan Sudan Link.

Bactrian camels originate from Northern Asia so will be used to the current chilly temperatures.

For the actual service, the camels will be 'dressed' in fabrics, while their handlers will wear exotic costumes including fur hats, all imported from Beijing.

During the actual service, the puppets, camels and donkey will make their way up and down the Cathedral aisles and the nave, creatively re-imagining the story of the Nativity for the children.

The aim of this rehearsal will be to test the route and make sure this gorgeous but hug creatures can fit through the doors easily.
