Major fire breaks out at nature reserve in Dorset

A large fire has destroyed part of a nature reserve in Dorset.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at Godlingston Heath just before 9pm on Tuesday (30 November).

The Studland and Godlingston Heaths are located on the Isle of Purbeck, between Swanage and Sandbanks.

Crews remain at the scene to damp down any remaining hot spots.

It is being reported that 600 square metres were alight, with strong winds making the flames unpredictable and dangerous.

The fire has broken out on heathland on the Dorset coast

Fire crews warned residents and visitors to stay away from the Site of Special Scientific Interest, which is managed by the National Trust.

Back in 2013, large fires destroyed parts of Canford Heath and Studland thought to have been caused by arsonists.
