Village Post Office returns to Groombridge after residents came together

Watch: ITV News Meridian's Andy Dickenson reports.

The people of Groombridge have been celebrating today, after their village Post Office reopened its doors today.

The unique village, which sits on the border of Kent and Sussex, took a unique view when the shop was under threat - with the parish council stepping in to keep the site running.

Residents worked with councillors to come up with a plan to bring the Post Office back, which involved raising council tax, which 95% of the village agreed to.

There were many smiles today as all their efforts paid off, with none other than the town clerk working behind the counter.

The facility was previously under threat when the previous postmistress retired, prompting the parish to poll for its future.

99% of residents polled wanted to save it, and after a thorough refurbishment and a management change - they achieved just that.

The shop itself serves a population of just 3,000 people, and is described as crucial.

The refurbishment was paid for by investment from the council, via a public works loan, which villagers say is worth every penny.

In a village of two counties, it can say that its one post office is definitely delivering one thing, smiles.
