Further frustration for families over Gosport War Memorial Hospital investigations
Watch: ITV News Meridian's Sally Simmonds reports.
There was yet more frustration today for relatives of patients who died at the Gosport War Memorial Hospital, after they attended a meeting in Fareham today (Wednesday 20th) to discuss the future of the investigation.
The meeting was hosted by Kent and Essex Police, who are investigating the deaths.
Families had hoped that historic failings by Hampshire Police, who have already held three investigations, would be reviewed independently.
However during the meeting they discovered that an internal investigation is to take place instead.
Watch: David Wilson received reassurance from the IOPC.
Around 40 relatives attended the meeting, where they listened to a briefing from Kent and Essex Police, and the National Crime Agency.
Many were disappointed to discover that Hampshire Police would be conducting its own internal investigation.
It's a move prompted by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has instructed the force to open a new complaints investigation.
The IOPC said Hampshire Police's response was 'insufficient' to complaints about the way it investigated the deaths of patients at the Gosport War Memorial hospital.
Watch: Families raise concerns after the meeting.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said:
“We have just received a response from the IOPC. This is clear that we need to explain our decisions better. They have asked us to explain our rationale more clearly and to share more information with the complainants. It is our intention to do that.”
