Boxing packs a punch for fitness and concentration levels at girls primary school
Video report by Andy Dickenson
Nowadays, boxing may be a sport seen rarely on the school curriculum, even more rarely at a girls primary school, but a new initiative in Sussex is fighting to change all that.
Brighton Girls Prep is introducing shadow boxing lessons in a bid to help pupils with their concentration levels and boost fitness. Taking a swing at tradition, and certainly making an impact.
The school also wanted to introduce a new sport to engage pupils who might not be interested in traditional girls school sports. To this end, earlier this year it launched its skateboarding scholarship and now offers skateboarding classes for all pupils.
Current studies show that nationally just 14% of girls aged between five and 16 achieve recommended levels of physical activity, dropping to 10% of girls aged 13-16. Girls here, hoping to deliver those statistics a knockout blow.
