Fire crews tackle major barn and hay blaze on Isle of Wight

Fire crews have been tackling a barn and hay blaze on the Isle of Wight.

Around 40 firefighters were called to the scene just before 12pm on Monday (30 August) after reports of a barn alight on Ashey Road near Ryde.

Smoke and flames were coming from the roof of the barn, and a trailer full of hay bales was also on fire.

Ryde, Newport, Sandown, Ventnor and Cowes fire engines were called to the scene along with support vehicles from East Cowes, Freshwater and a command unit from Portchester.

Crews tackled the blaze throughout the night until it was scaled back with only a few vehicles remaining on the scene.

At around 6.30am on Tuesday (31 August) two engines remained at the scene to dampen down any hot spots.

There were no reported injuries and the cause is being investigated.
