Dozens of migrants rescued after heading to Dover in overloaded kayaks

Video report by ITV Meridian reporter Abigail Bracken

ITV News has filmed more migrants heading from Calais to Dover in overloaded kayaks. Dozens of people were seen trying to cross the channel border, including at least three children. HM Coastguards had to use a helicopter, a plane and three of their vessels to rescue them.

It comes after it was revealed that hundreds of boats believed to have been used in past crossing attempts are being stored at a high-security Government warehouse in Whitfield in Dover. The Home Office say the boats are being stored to use as evidence in people-smuggler prosecutions.

At least 2,800 migrants have crossed to the UK so far this year. Home Secretary, Priti Patel, told MPs that the UK Government is currently locked in a row with France over differing "interpretations" of maritime law while trying to tackle the crisis.
