Firefighters remain at scene of large fire in Southampton

Firefighters remain at the scene of a major fire which broke out in Southampton last night.

More than 70 firefighters were called to a disused social club on Victor Street in Shirley just before 6 o'clock last night. No-one has been injured.

People living nearby have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed due to the smoke.

Crews from Redbridge, St Mary’s, Hightown, Romsey, Totton, Fareham, Lyndhurst, Botley, Winchester, Eastleigh, Hythe, Lymington and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were all called to tackle the fire.

A number of roads were closed, and a cordon was put in place. Shortly after 9pm, firefighters had successfully surrounded the fire and began damping down. The incident was then scaled down from the 14-pumps it reached at its height.

Crews remain at the scene this morning to ensure there are no further hotspots.
