Events to combat loneliness at Christmas a 'lifeline' for the elderly

A new survey by Age UK has found 220,000 older people in the South East say Christmas is the loneliest time of the year.

Volunteers at the Village Pump group in Hampshire are working to combat social isolation by bringing people together.

Events are organised throughout the year in Crondall and Ewshot in Hampshire to combat loneliness and build community spirit.

A special Christmas lunch has been laid on for dozens of pensioners.

Brenda, who lost her husband a few years ago, says it's a "lifeline" for her.

Some are struggling with health conditions, others are missing people they have lost.

Many say they attend the events for the companionship, the laughs, the friendship and the camaraderie.
