Families in Kidlington left traumatised after finding graves flooded by heavy rain

Bereaved families in Oxfordshire say they've been left traumatised after loved ones' graves were flooded by heavy rain.

Residents say they have pleaded with Kidlington Parish Council to sort out the drainage after a number of graves were submerged in water but the problem is yet to be resolved.

The council says they're making steady progress to deal with the problem.

Betty Rogers is one of those residents particularly concerned about the flooding.

She arrived one morning to tend her husband's grave, only to discover it was submerged in water.

She and her son Chris say the discovery was "heartbreaking."

Residents say that flooding has been an issue for some time at Kidlington Cemetery.

The site Bicester Road was opened in 2012 as the cemetery at St Mary's was full.

The Council said that they were aware the site suffered from some localised flooding but they said they "were advised that this could be resolved."

Since the cemetery was built, Kidlington Parish Council have installed two large 'soakaways' at the edge of the cemetery, as well as four drainage channels.

The Council has since taken the decision to temporarily cease burials in the particular part of the cemetery affected by flooding.
