Man dies after his car crashes into substation and bursts into flames in Southampton

A man has died after his car crashed into an electricity sub-station which then burst into flames.

The black BMW 520 saloon was involved in the accident in Western Esplanade, Southampton, at about 11pm on Monday.

The driver of the car died at the scene according to Hampshire Police.

A small number of local businesses suffered a power outage as a result of the crash.

Police said that Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) dealt with the outage and no residential properties were affected.
