Portsmouth Football Club beat Sunderland to take home Checkatrade trophy at Wembley

Portsmouth Football fans have got the victory they were hoping for tonight taking home the Checkatrade Trophy at Wembley.

There were jubilant scenes as 40,000 Portsmouth fans watched their team beat Sunderland.

Pompey took fellow League One promotion contenders Sunderland into extra time thanks to Nathan Thompson’s late equaliser.

And just minutes before the final whistle Jamal lowe’s strike looked to have sealed the win. Sunderland’s late equaliser though - meant the game had to be decided on penalties.

It was a nail biting match, with Ollie Hawkins sealing the victory with the winning spot kick.

Thousands of fans travelled to the capital from the south coast to witness the big win for the club.
