It was a night to honour ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things

Pride of Britain Awards - with Meridian East's regional winners

The Pride of Britain awards shines a light on those who put others before themselves, whether it's fundraising for charity, acts of bravery or extraordinary kindness.

Among the winners was John Volanthen, from Brighton, who was part of a group of divers who risked their lives to rescue twelve Thai boys and their football coach from a treacherous cave in Thailand. He and his team were awarded the Outstanding Bravery Award.

Also representing our region was our Regional Fundraiser of the Year, Hannah Richards who has raised thousands for charities that aim to prevent male suicide and those that help families who've lost loved ones at a young age.

Among the worthy winners was Ma Smith from Oxford. The 89-year-old set up the Oxford Soup Kitchen twenty-eight years ago and has dedicated her life to serving the community.

Also representing our region was our Regional Fundraiser of the Year, Nathan Abbott. He was born with a cleft palate and now raises money to give children in other countries access to corrective surgery.
