It's something that can have a terrible effect on a person's mental health and wellbeing. And loneliness can can often affect people more, as they get older. A quarter of older people in Thanet live alone. But moves are underway to encourage people to take part in activities, from exercise classes to music lessons.
The lottery-funded Ageless Thanet project is now in its third year.
East Kent was chosen as it was highlighted as an area where a quarter of older people live alone, sometimes in neighbourhoods with few facilities.
