Toddler seriously injured from falling scaffolding

A toddler has been taken to hospital with serious head injures after being injured by falling scaffolding in Brighton.

The 3-year-old-girl was being pushed in a pushchair by her mother along Preston Street yesterday morning when a large piece of timber fell on her head.

The timber is believed to have fallen from scaffolding surrounding a building. The toddler - from Lancing remains in a serious condition.

Staff at the restaurant below the scaffolding say the building work has nothing to do with their business.

A 32-year-old man from Hove has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and a 39-year-old man from Brighton was arrested on suspicion of failing to discharge general health and safety duty at work.

Police are working with Health and Safety Executive who will be investigating.
