David Bowie fans have gathered in Aylesbury for the unveiling of the world's first statue of the singer.

The honour is in recognition of the star’s links with the town where he launched his Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust albums - unveiling his Ziggy persona for the first time.

The statue, the £100,000 cost of which was crowdfunded, depicts the musician at various stages of his career.

It will also be lit up, play a Bowie song on the hour from 9am - 9pm, and even have a web cam which people can view online.

The statue was the brainchild of David Stopps from Aylesbury, possibly the town's biggest Bowie fan.

He single-handedly took his dream of having a David Bowie statue in his home town from idea to reality.

The unique bronze artwork was designed by sculptor Andrew Sinclair, and is officially named 'Earthly Messenger'.

Stopps has also petitioned for the town of Aylesbury to rename itself 'Aylesbowie'- though that may be less likely to become reality....
