Welcome back, Sun! We celebrated the Winter Solstice

Thousands of people travelled to Stonehenge to celebrate the Winter Solstice. Crowds stood among the stones as dawn broke on the morning after the shortest day.

The ancient festival celebrates rebirth and is one of just four days when the public are allowed close to the stone circle.

From the early hours they came to join the celebrations which have been held in Wiltshire for thousands of years.

Watch this report by Mary Stanley:

Every year thousands gather at Stonehenge - with pagan customs and traditions taking place within the stone circle.

But the event also attracts tourists and families and coach parties who come to witness a piece of history.

Solstice marks the moment the sun shines at its most southerly point - the celebration of longer days, rebirth and hope for the future.
