Father of murdered teenager awarded Honorary Doctorate in Law

The father of Stephen Lawrence - who was murdered by a racist gang in London - has been honoured at Portsmouth University.

Neville Lawrence received an Honorary Doctorate in Law - for his work to get justice for his son who was 19 years old when he was killed in 1993.

It took almost ten years of campaigning before two of those responsible were jailed. It changed the face of policing and race relations in the country.

Mr Lawrence has also recently been appointed as Chair of the Metropolitan Police Knife Crime Group.

Mr Lawrence was also awarded today for his work to combat hate crime and support young people - giving more than 150 talks at schools, universities and prisons. 24 years on from Stephen's death - who wanted to study architecture - he says the emotions are still raw.
