When Muhammad Ali came to Abingdon
As tributes pour in for boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who died this morning aged 74, many people living on a council estate in Abingdon will remember him coming to the area on dozens of occasions.
He visited Paddy Monaghan more than 20 times at his home in Saxton Road after the pair became close friends.
In 2012, the story of their relationship featured in an ITV documentary titled 'When Ali came to Britain'. The documentary showed home video of Ali with Mr Monaghan's family:
The two became close when Mr Monaghan started a campaign to get Ali’s boxing licence reinstated after he refused to serve in the Vietnam War.
When the former heavyweight world champion came to visit, he was filmed shaking hands with residents and signing autographs.
