'Call in the Army' - hauliers demand a military presence in Calais
The chief executive of the Road Haulage Association has renewed calls for the French military to be deployed to protect lorry drivers on cross Channel routes.
Richard Burnett said that although around 1,300 police officers are deployed around Calais, the association feels it is not enough to handle the increasing number of migrants drawn to the port and attempting to cross the Channel in the back of lorries.
Security at the Eurotunnel has been improved in recent months with the completion of security fencing at the terminal. But numbers of migrants have continued to grow at Calais.
Mr Burnett added that increased security would not make the problem disappear overnight but would act as a deterrent.
